Hello, can anyone tell me the year the old pier at Dumbarton Castle was demolished. I have seen it on several photographs and I know there are posts visible in the water.
thank you

Hi samlibrarian
Welcome to RootsChat
There is this:
Projects he was involved in included NS4477 : The Black Linn Reservoir scheme, and the creation of a pier at the foot of Dumbarton Castle (
that pier was destroyed by a storm in 1900
).

MonicaL thank you
In MacPhail's 'Royal Burgh of Dumbarton' he writes that Samuel Bennett's 'pet scheme for a pier at Dumbarton Castle, which was opened in 1874, proved a white elephant....much of the pier was washed away in 1897 and the last remnants were removed in the 1960's".
thanks
