Henry Head - Wartling/Herstmonceaux
« on: Friday 17 August 12 12:05 BST (UK) »
I'm interested in finding the birth record for a Henry Head.  The 1851 census has him living in Herstmonceaux, with a birth in Wartling abt 1784.  He married Elizabeth Roberts in Herstmonceaux in 1815.  I have a Henry Head born in Warbleton in 1784 and wondering if it could be the same person.
Thanks in advance.

I have looked up on SFHG site for baptisms and the only Henry Head I found for Hurstmonceux was Henry Bapt 5/7/1818 Father Henry mother elizabeth he is a husbandman living in Drummers Hole.
I looked at the Wartling baptisms but he was not there.
Wartling does have a family history group so you could contact them.
Unfortunately people often pu other places down as their birth and you get a better idea in later censuses.
Wartling is so small I expect someone will be able to help. I have a lot of ancestors from there.
On the Mariiage file it says that both Henry and Elizabeth are from Hurstmoncuex, but I couldn't find him.
Have not looked for Elizabeth.

Hi roverinexile

Don't know whether you sorted this one, but one thing to bear in mind is that Wartling parish is actually next to Warbleton parish in some of its northern parts, although looking at the villages you wouldn't think that possible.

So if Henry Head was baptised in Warbleton parish church it didn't necessarily mean he actually lived in the  parish but it was actually closer for his parents to have him baptised there although he lived over the border in Wartling parish.

Wartling is a parish of two halves and the left half is quite a way from the parish church.  http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/SSX/Wartling/index.php gives a great look at these parishes.

Hi both,

Thanks for your replies.  The maps are very interesting, with both Warbleton and Wartling parishes covering quite large areas.  From taking a hike around the area today, I see that Warbleton itself is a pretty tiny village.

A further Head question someone may be able to help with.  I have a Mary Head baptised at Warbleton in 1771.  The SMI CD has a Mary Head marrying Thomas Message at Warbleton in 1793.  Dates seem plausible.  A lot of people on Ancestry have this marriage as Thomas Message to Mary Hoad (bap 1766 at Warbleton).  I wondered if anyone else is investigating this or has these people in their trees.

Thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard

I just checked the burials for Warbleton and found the following two which may or may not be of any help.

Thomas Message buried on 14 September 1842, age 75 therefore born 1767.  Possibility he is the farmer found on the 1841 census with Sarah age 55 (daughter?) John and Henry both presumably sons.

Mary Message buried on 3 November 1827, age 57 so born 1770.

Thanks, Kerry.  This is very helpful, and suggests I've found the right marriage.

Best,
Richard
