Elizabeth Valance (various spellings) abt 1804 Maidstone
« on: Monday 20 August 12 08:33 BST (UK) »
I've actually posted a request similar to this before.  I'm still trying to find parents for Elizabeth.  In familysearch I found a William Vallance born to a William and Elizabeth Vallance in All Saints Parish, Maidstone bap 7 Oct 1810.   I'm crossing everything that this might be an elder brother to my Liz.  I've not found anything further about him from any census record.

I'd be most grateful if someone could check out for me whether this is the case?

Many thanks.

Lesley

Hi Lesley

I see, from another of your posts, that you weren't sure if Elizabeth had been married before.  Have you now sighted the register for her marriage to ensure that she wasn't a widow?  Also, might the names of the witnesses by helpful?

From transcriptions; the William VALLENCE you found on familysearch, baptised on 6(7) Oct 1810 at All Saints, Maidstone with parents William & Elizabeth was born on 22 September 1810. An additional note says his father was in the 24th Lt. Dragoons - may possibly help in trying to tie the family together.

There is only one other VALLENCE baptism (any spelling) in the register transcriptions - a Mary Frances in 1774 (born to a John & Elizabeth who married at the same church in 1772).

Thank you both for your replies and suggestions.

According to familysearch she married (John Hastings) on 8 Jun 1830
All saints, Maidstone.  They lived and had children in Leicester and in Nottingham.

Her eldest daughter was Sarah Ann Valence Hastings born 8 Sep 1825
Workhouse, Nottingham.  Who knows whether the father was JH?

I took her maiden name from the birth cert of her son and my gggrandfather Elisha (Hastings) born 13 January, 1838 in Leicestershire.

I'll explore the 24 Lt. Dragoons, thank you for that.

I just wanted to add:  her daughter Selina was born 1833 (mostly!) in Maidstone (mostly - she oscilates between Leicester and Maidstone in the census records!).

Her siblings were born 1825 Nottingham, 1831 Leicestershire (probably), 1834 Nottingham, 1836 Leicester - but died in 1892 in Edmonton!, 1838 and 1841 Leicestershire and 1844 in Nottingham.  Get around these shoe makers don't they????

Here's the details of the 1830 marriage from transcriptions:
1830 Jun 8 John HASTINGS Widower Otp  married Elizabeth VALLANCE Spinster Otp by Banns
Witnesses: T.D. Jones & Rich. Martin

Might give you some clues there.

I can't see John HASTINGS previous marriage at All Saints Maidstone, nor the baptisms of any HASTINGS children.

I feel as if I at last have something to go on now.  Thanks.

(John Hastings previous marriage may have been to a woman from Nuneaton in 1802!).

It sounds as if John and Liz's chdn that said in the census reports they were born in Maidstone, were mistaken.  There was enough to-ing and fro-ing between Nottingham and Leicester as it was.  I was kinda hoping that the Maidstone connection meant she still had family there, but something took her to Nottingham- maybe that was to visit/live with a family member there.

Thanks again,

lesley  :-)
