William Watkins Lodging House
« on: Wednesday 25 May 05 22:18 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone help with the following.

Can you tell me what this establishment is ?
It is listed in the 1881 Census and has a lot of Inmates, all young women.

'William Watkins' Lodging House.
St. Leonards, Streatham.  Wandsworth.

It shows several Priests, Assistant Matrons, Needleworker, Servants, Cook etc. Plus 5 pages of Inmates.

Many Thanks   Andy :)

From a google search -
rootsweb - Berkshire

 "I eventually
found daughter Emma GOLDING, age 16 as an "inmate" at the William Watkins
Lodging House, Streatham, London, which appeared to be a Church run
Institution for older girls from various parts of the Country. The second
daughter Amelia Jane GOLDING, age 14, was an "inmate" at Astral House,
Russell Road, Buckhurst Hill, Chigwell, Essex, which appeared to be more a
State run Boarding School/Orphanage or Educational Institution for younger
school-age girls."

Hi  :)

Thanks for your reply.
Yes I agree it certainly seems like a church run institution.
It is strange no one seems to know about it though.

I came across this RootsChat thread while searching for info regarding someone I'm researching, who is listed as residing at William Watkins Lodging House in 1891...

I see that the front page of the enumeration book says
Name: William Watkins
Description: Magdalen Hospital - Home for Fallen Women
Where situated: Streatham, London

Page one of the inhabitants is William Watkins. Relation to head - Warden. Profession - Clerk of Holy Orders. He is married, to Betsy Ellen.

So, William Watkins Lodging House = Magdalen Hospital - Home for Fallen Women!
I hope this helps other researchers!
Happy hunting to all :)
