How do you find out if someone was buried or cremated?

How do you find out who owns a grave ? I know who is in it.

One possibility, if you know the date of the death, is to look for a funeral notice in the newspaper for the area.

I found my grandfather's grave by asking at the local council that had responsibility for the cemetery.
The gentleman there was really helpful and gave me the exact plot number and date of burial.

I usually use newspaper death notices to see if they were cremated or buried but you could also try findagrave.com as they sometimes have the information.

The grave I am looking for is in 1969 in Scotland... My great grandfathers grave ... my grandfather has since passed away although not sure he had contact with his father before he died ...  I have a copy of the death cert so know when he died and my parents did go to search the local cemetery although mum discovered this week there are possibly 3 others in the area ...


On another separate grave matter - would a local council be able to tell me who owns a grave?

I am not sure about Scotland but I do know that the local council knew in England when I asked them about my grandfather.

The council will be able to give you all the details you want as long as you have a date to go on. Crematoria also keep records. Best to try the newspaper first to make sure of details. It would be a waste of time looking for a grave if, for example, there was a cremation and the ashes were scattered. Sometimes people are buried a distance from where they lived, back in an earlier family lair.

looking on www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ I can't find any archives for as late as 1969.

I will try and contact the local council to where he lived and see if they can help

There are two main types of cemeteries in Scotland other than churchyards - those run by the local Council's and those run by private companies.

Depending upon where the burial was and how much information you already have most local councils will search their records for you. Some charge a fee for such a search which can be quite hefty. If however you have the lair details many will perform a look up of their records for free or at minimal cost.
