Aberdeen: John SIEVEWRIGHT, Born c1829
« on: Thursday 30 August 12 22:00 BST (UK) »
Hello,

John SIEVEWRIGHT was born c1829, Mother Janet, Brothers Robert and William, Sister Hannah......I have not been able to discover his father's name nor any 1841 Census details.   This information was extracted from his Conduct Record in Tasmania.

He was transported to Tasmania in 1848 for 7 years, having been originally sentenced on 23/03/1844, and eventually gaining his Certificate of Freedom in June 1851.   As far as I can ascertain he did not re-offend thereafter.

I have not been able to find any information for him in Scotland or Tasmania (including Australia generally) and wonder if anyone can help with even the smallest details.   I gather SIEVEWRIGHT is not an uncommon name in Scotland.

Thank you,

Tony Cocks

Have you got a copy of his trial papers etc.? I looked him up in the National Archives of Scotland on-line catalogue and see he had been in prison before and had a criminal record before his 1844 conviction.

In 1841 there is a 12 year old John Sievewright in The Prison (West Branch), Old Machar, Aberdeen.

Just found the 12 year old in the jail as above. It is certainly going to be him. Probably worth looking him up in the Aberdeen papers too. Certainly at the time of his two convictions.

I've been searching the National Library of Scotland's 19th century newspapers but have not found anything pertaining to John. :(

Good Morning,

Thank you for all the information and links.

I looked at the calendar but it is not Friday the 13th!!!......I could not find the 1841 Census entry courtesy of my Ancestry membership and the 19th Century British Library Newspapers website has no mention of him.    Certainly he had a history of previous convictions, 5 in all, although I failed to find him in the National Archives of Scotland, but that is more my lack of diligence and I shall return to the website for some further fossicking.

It is all rather frustrating, especially as no details about him have been retrieved in Australia once he achieved freedom in June 1851.
And, of course, the name would have been unusual down under and therefore easier to find references.....or so I thought!!

Tony, I found the 1841 census entry in Freecen. It's probably been mistranscribed in Ancestry! Also, remember to try different spellings of Sievewright in your searches.

You learn something new every day.......I certainly did not know of the existence of Freecen and, of course, found John SIEVEWRIGHT in prison immediately.   Actually, I question the competence of Ancestry of being totally accurate in some respects.

I take your point about spelling.   Andrew SIVEWRIGHT, born 1838 also in Aberdeen, was eventually found as SUVEWRIGHT!!   I applied the same logic to John SIEVEWRIGHT but, sadly, nothing positive in Scotland (until now) nor Australia.

Thank you for helping.

Tony
