Patrick Joseph Creaney born 17/04/1911
« on: Friday 31 August 12 00:20 BST (UK) »
Hello All

I'm trying to trace info about my late father.

I've always believed he was born in Aghagallon 17th April 1911 (died Bristol 1989).
According to dad's marriage cert in 1940 his father was John Creaney deceased who had been a linen weaver.

Dad was born a few weeks too late to be in the 1911 census.

I've tried GRO & PRONI but they can't trace a birth cert for him.

I've written to St Patricks RC Church Aghagallon & they have no record of him.

I've applied to the Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow to see if they have his WWII service records.
But had a response that it will be 18 months before they will have time to search for them.

I know he had a bother called John who had two girls, one called Collette, the other name I don't know or the name of John's wife.
He also had a sister called Lizzie who married John Lavery & had children Desmond, Harry, John, Noel, Pauline & Seamus.

So as a long shot I thought I'd post on here in case anyone has any suggestions where else I can look.
Or a really long shot in case any descendants of my aunt & uncle happen to read this.

I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you

Patrick Creaney born 1911 - possibly Aghagallon (father).
John Anthony Brankin born 1887 Armagh (grandfather - mum's side).
Mary Anne (Minnie) Cullinan born 1894 Armagh (grandmother - mum's side).

Many thanks Carole.

I've been on the National Archives web site to view 1911 census & tried searching different spellings of the surname & looking under other counties in case I'm mistaken about his place of birth.  Also tried searching for Lizzie Creaney (family rumour was that he may have been raised by Lizzie which suggests she was older so should have appeared in the census).  I've also searched for combinations of first names John & Lizzie as father & daughter.

But no obvious candidates jump out at me for further investigation.

In the 1901 census there is a 19 year old John Creaney in Aghagallon who was a servant to ELIZZA McCarry and her family

Posting links to the census pages does help others see the information you've already found.

The 1911 census has only 2 entries for a John Creaney in Aghagallon - one was aged 78 and the other was 24 and unmarried
In both cases Aghagallon is the D.E.D. rather than the townland-
John Creaney age 78 and John Creaney age 24
same family in 1901-

I've tried GRO & PRONI but they can't trace a birth cert for him.
If his parents weren't married the birth would be registered under his mother's name.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

From another angle, when James Lavery married Lizzie Creaney (father John, linen weaver) on 20 January 1926, the fact she was full age should make her show in the 1911 census ...

Is this Lizzie (Elizabeth / Eliza, etc.) married to James Lavery the right one?

Thanks Gaffy.
Yesterday I asked GRONI to search for a marriage certificate for James and Lizzie in the mid 1920's.
So this date looks like it could be them.
Hopefully the certificate will confirm where Lizzie was living prior to the marriage which may be proof of a link to the correct family.

Hi PGC1962,

I work for the NI War Memorial Museum in Belfast and we are working towards verifying the list of casualties of the Belfast Blitz. I'm pleased to say that I've only a few more cases to verify until we have verified the military casualty list but one of the outstanding names is a young gunner in the Royal Artillery named Shaun Creaney, who is buried in St Colman's Lurgantarry

https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2690046/creaney,-shaun/

Frustratingly, I can find no other record of his service or death other than the CWGC and your posts and profile came up in my searches due to the Patrick Creaney named in your footer. I was hoping you might be a relation or be able to help in some way?
