Hi Hollylianne,

I had a look at the 1871 census for you and it is as follows:

It was really hard to read though  :-\

89 Main Street, Patna?, Straiton, Ayr

James Ramsay Head M 45yrs Miner b. Patna? Ayr
Elizabeth Ramsay Wife M 45yrs b. Arde??son, Ayr
Margaret Ramsay Dau U 12yrs Scholar b. Patna, Ayr
Alexander Ramsay Son U 9yrs Scholar b. Patna, Ayr
Janet Ramsay Dau 8yrs Scholar b. Patna, Ayr
Jane Ramsay Grandchild 2yrs b. Patna, Ayr

The writing was horrible but I think that is what it said. I hope this helps a bit :)

Hi Hollie,

You are probably aware of this but just in case ...

Straiton is one of those frustrating parishes where, pre-1855, only the girls have been extracted into the online IGI birth/christening batches!  The boys, however, can be found on the Scottish Church Records CD which can be consulted at LDS FHCs.

So the births/christenings of James RAMSAY above and his brothers are not found in the online IGI as entries formally extracted from the Parish Registers though those of two sisters are. Fortunately the boys (and the girls too) have been submitted by a member of the LDS - and those submissions look pretty reliable.

Alexander RAMSEY/Margaret McNEIL (all pre-1855):
*Mary b 24 Apr 1816 (Extracted entry; also LDS)
John b 2 Nov 1818 (LDS)
*Jane b 31 Jul 1821 (Extracted entry; also LDS)
Alexander b 29 Sep 1823 (LDS)
James b 29 May 1825 (LDS)

I notice that you didn't mention Alexander or Janet who appear in the census which Jenny kindly found for you.
Just in case, here are the children listed in the IGI (the first entry extracted from the Parish Register and the rest from the Statutory Register - Statutory Registration having begun in 1855).

James RAMSAY or James Neil RAMSAY and Elizabeth MCKELLAR or MCKILLAR or MCKILLER (married 1853):
Mary b 24 Jan 1854 (mother's name as MCKILLAR)
Elizabeth Alexander b 2 Jun 1855 (mother's name as MCKILLER)
Ann b 29 Jan 1857
Margaret b 16 Dec 1858
Alexander b 17 Jun 1861
Janet b 26 Mar 1863
James b 10 Jun 1865

So, if Mary and Elizabeth survived, they must have left home by 1871.  And perhaps little James did not survive.  You could check this on ScotlandsPeople.

Have you used the ScotlandsPeople site at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
It is a pay per view site but is good value for money.  They have BDMs, censuses (so far 1871-1901), and wills (the search for wills is free) there so you should be able to find out heaps more about the above families if you wish.

All the best,

JAP
