British subject of Baghdad, Persia?
« on: Friday 31 August 12 10:02 BST (UK) »
Hello

I hope someone can help me shed some light on a situation I've come across in trying to piece together my family tree.

My great great grandmother Feroze Lapham b.1851 is stated as "Baghdad British Subject" on census records. In the military records I have found for her husband, Thomas William Lapham, b.1850, a Telegraphist in the royal engineers, it states they were married in Tehran in 20th June 1892. Her maiden name was Ward and I've realised she was married before as her daughter Anne Ward is described as 'stepdaughter' to William on the 1881 census.

Can anyone shed any light as to what their situation might be? I cannot find a birth certificate for Feroze, is it likely my gt-gt grandmother was of Persian origin and married British men twice? Research into the name Feroze suggests it is a male name. Very confusing!

Any help or guidance much appreciated!

Thanks!

Charlotte
