What happened to Ellen Kelly?
« on: Friday 31 August 12 13:07 BST (UK) »
Hello

Ellen Cannon was born in 1841 in B'ham to Thomas and Catherine Cannon and I have her in every census from 1841 to 1861.

In March 1868 she marries William Kelly at St Philip's, B'ham; his age is given as 27, he is living on Steelhouse Lane in Birmingham, and is a Private in the 13th foot regiment (Somerset Light Infantry); his father is James Kelly (Blacksmith) - not known whether James is alive or deceased as Ellen's father is correctly given as Thomas (Bricklayer) but he was deceased by this time.   According to the age on his marriage cert, I would figure he was born around 1840-1841.

Problem is I can't find either of them from this date onwards...  I can't confirm any deaths or remarriages and can't find them on any census anywhere!

Any ideas please?

Hi

If William Kelly was in the Military they may have gone abroad

Hello Margp

I did wonder about that but don't know whether an ordinary infantryman would have been able to take his wife abroad....   I do know that his regiment were posted to numerous countries around the time of their marriage including Ireland, Gibraltar, Malta etc...

Thanks

Nell

Hi Nell

Have you any details on there children, I am not 100% on this but, I believe that if they were away for a length of time there wives had the choice to accompany them

Hi Nell

I would start a new thread on the Military Forum, too if any one can help, and link this thread to it, I have checked on Familysearch for baptist records for, Kelly children with parents William and Ellen in Gibraltar/Spain/India, I will check and see what I can find in Ireland, I have also checked on FindMyPast but as you say there are so many Kelly's

Thank you Marg, I have submitted a post about the Kelly's on the Military Forum and have been given advice...   but alas no-one knows what became of them...

I'll keep plodding on - thanks for trying.
