Nuthurst PRs
« on: Friday 31 August 12 19:26 BST (UK) »
Hello there

On 21 Nov 1787 John Read married Elizabeth Lusam at Nuthurst St Andrew.  According to the Sussex Marriage Index they were both OTP but I can find hardly anyone named Lusam in Sussex (or indeed anywhere else).  Elizabeth seems to have buried a child called Benjamin in Shipley earlier that year but where she has come from I have no idea.  I can't find a burial for her

If someone has access to the original parish records and could check the marriage to see if there is a different reading of her surname I would be very grateful.  Hopefully there is!

Many thanks in advance

Ashley

Hi Ashley,
The LDS familysearch has the same marriage on their site with the name 'LUSAM'.  Try Online Parish Clerks.  A Margett McConnell has Nuthurst & can do a look-up from the registers,

Jane

Of this parish (OTP) - does not necessarily mean they were both born in that parish - just that they satisfied the short residential qualifying time required to enable them to marry there (approx 3wks)

Hi,

An LDS wild card search (?usam) for Benjamin turns up his burial under the name Susam.  A similar search for Elizabeth produces her wedding under Lusman, but no christening.

Looking for her christening under Lusum produces umpteen variations of the spelling- one or the other of them might be more common to that area of Sussex

Have you looked for her in the early BMD?  In the '41 census.  She would be have been old but it's entirely possible she was alive.  Any record of children from the marriage?  Their names might be clues to her parent's names

Jann

Thanks for the suggestion Jann - I have looked but with no success.

She is a bit of a mystery I am afraid.

The following could be a christening for Benjamin:

Benjamin LASHAM, bap 25 Mar 1787 Horsham St Mary Mother Elizabeth, baseborn.
