I have found that my ancestor George Thomas and his wife Catherine and children settled in Auckland in 1864. He was discharged to pension from the 70th Regiment and his papers say intended place of residence Auckland. His son ends up in Parua Bay near Whangarei. My question is what sources are available to find where this family settled? I have found the children Alfred, Agnes and Catherine so far, but there could be others as well.
I am coming over to Auckland in January and would love to know where to look to make the search as helpful as possible. Any ideas?

A trip to the Auckland Public Library in Lorne Street, (Central Business District) would probably be your best bet. The staff in the Family History section should be able to help you and there are many free resources available.

Off the top of my head.....Electoral Rolls on A$ will provide a general overview of where folks lived.  If you are in Auckland then the Auckland Library will have various postal and similar microfiche detailing addresses etc.  Perhaps get in touch with genebrarian on Rootschat as she works for the library family history research department about other resources they may have.

There is a branch of our National Archives in Auckland that may hold probate information and/or school and hospital records if you find them on the Archway website. http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/

Good idea about the Archives as they are very near Auckland airport. If you are already registered with Archives, documents can be ordered ahead of time for a specific day. However not sure if you have to be a New Zealand citizen to register?? No doubt all this information will be on the website.

Access the birth fiche at Auckland Lib to see where the children's births were registered. There is a same name Auckland and Mongonui northland..so will help you decide which is yours

Thanks John, I found that. Being Australian I am not sure of the geography of New Zealand. It has infinitely improved in the last year!
