Lorrha Parish Priests
« on: Sunday 02 September 12 21:46 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Just wondering if there is a resource anywhere for historical records of the Lorrha parish priests? I've recently been able to add one such priest to my tree, but can't pinpoint dates in which he served in this capacity.

A chance to get a photo of said man would also not go amiss :)

A parish history would undoubtedly have your man. What was his name?

Fr. James Meagher, the chap who wrote this - http://catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000019835

Thus we know he was ministering in the 1870s. His sister, who I believe to my ancestor, was born in 1829, so I suppose he was probably around from the 1850s onwards.

I know not of any parish history for Lorrha, though...

Hello,
The parish is in Killaloe Diocese. There may be information at the offices or there are parish contacts. Our local parishes (England) tend to have photos and information about past parish priests.

Regards
Heywood

Thanks for the link, Heywood. I know that in the neighbouring parish of Terryglass/Kilbarron the author Bridie O'Brien managed to track down some very old photos of the parish priests...but sadly, as I thought, nothing similar has been done for Lorrha...

Most parishes have had a history published at one time or another. Next time I'm in Thurles library I'll see if they have one on Lorrha

This looks like the correct James Meagher

I don't have a sub so can't see them in full but there seems to be articles in issues of the Freeman's Journal of the 23 and 27 August 1880 that mention this priest; so shortly after death. You might get family details there. It might be worth a look in whatever the local paper is as well. There is a published history of the diocese of Killaloe by Ignatius Murphy. I don't know if there is an  organised diocesan archive in Killaloe but if so, they would be more likely to have information about him than Maynooth.
