USA marriagr details ?
« on: Monday 03 September 12 09:23 BST (UK) »
Could some one tell me if it was normal or otherwise to give  spouses surnames ?
eg. I have a Florry Ellinthorpe, b, 1878, Bradford, Yorks, if my info is correct, USA 1900 cen. she is a boarder with Alfred A Chandler, she travelled to  USA in 1892, this makes her only 14ys. old , would she have travelled alone ?.

She then marries in 1901, among the details of her it gives, father Joseph, and mother Annie Earle
Marriage 2, 1912, West Townsend, Mass, parent details, Joseph Ellingthorpe & Annie Earlie
IE, it appears to give the mothers "nee" name ?

I cannot find a matching marriage of Ellinthorpe / Earlie, but thats another days work
                         Thank You bodger

Yes, I would expect most 20th century vital records to have the mother's maiden name.  If you look at the image for the 1912 marriage on www.familysearch.org, you can see that the top column asks for mother's maiden name.

I don't think it's impossible that a 14 year old might have travelled alone or with friend/neighbor.  However, I'd take the immigration information on the census with a grain of salt.  It's very common for them to be slightly incorrect or to fluctuate from census to census.  If you look at the actual image of the 1900 Census, it says that Florence had been in the US for 2 years.  So something is off - maybe she visited and returned home, or she forgot the correct year of her immigration, or the immigration date given may have been 1897 and the census taker misread his own handwriting.
