1911 Census for Eva Bartlett
« on: Friday 07 September 12 14:40 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm having trouble locating Eva Ann Bartlett & her daughter Ethel Algenia Bartlett in 1911 & hope someone can help me.

Eva Ann Bartlett b. 1868 Little Waldingfield, Suffolk, ENG (par Alfred & Sarah)
In 1891 she was boarding with William & Gertrude Crowder  in Hastings, Sussex under the name Annie Bartlett.

Her daughter Ethel was born illegitimately in 1888 Little Waldingfield, was brought up by grandparents. 1891 - 1901 in Little Waldingfield.

Presume Ethel moved to be by her mother in Sussex.

Ethel married William Donavon Simpson (b. Liverpool c.1887, in Army) June Q 1911 in Brighton, Sussex, whether this was before the census or not I'm not sure, but either way I cannot find Ethel Bartlett or Ethel Simpson anywhere or her mother.

Ethel was still alive in 1913 because she had a daughter.

Does anyone have any ideas because I'm stuck,

Thanks

You may already be aware that we are not allowed to do 1911 lookups on RootsChat, but we can give advice!

Have you tried looking for William Donavon Simpson in 1911 to see if he is married or single?  How do you know his date & place of birth?

If you haven't already done it...

Try looking without surnames, in case they have been mis-transcribed

Try looking for other members of the family or people they were associated with

Also, if you get Ethel & William's marriage certificate, it should say where they were both living and also confirm which name Ethel would be under in the census.

Unfortunately, you sometimes have to give in and spend money   :o ::)

I'm trying to help a descendent of Eva to trace her. He's got all details about Ethel right up to date, presume he's got marriage certificate, better check.

I've tried looking for everyone in 1911 without surnames & have drawn a blank so far.

Oh well, thanks for advice anyway I'll just keep plodding away.

Hi
William Donovan Simpson married Ethel Agenia Bartlett 11 April 1911 acording to his Army Service Records, there is a place of residence but very faint and hard to read  ...11, ?field Road, ?.
Sadly I see he died in ww1.

CWGC site has William Donovan Simpson (24 March 1918) and mentions Ethel A Simpson his wife, so she is still alive in 1918.

When William enlisted (6 Dec 1915), he gave his address as 59 Rosslyn Avenue, Barnes and this is also shown as the address for his next of kin Ethel Algenia Simpson.  Ethel's address has later been changed to 3 Lansdown Place, Hove.  His occupation on enlistment is Bank Accountant

Further on in the Service Record there is a note that his British War & Victory medals were issued in 1924 to his widow Ethel Algenia of 4 Chesham Place, Kemp Town, Brighton, Sussex

William Donovan Simpson married Ethel Agenia Bartlett 11 April 1911

The census was taken on April 2nd

Their daughter Irene was born in 1913 and registered in Richmond, Surrey.  This would fit with them still living in or near Barnes at the time.

Thanks Linda & Cathy really helpful information.

Got Williams' parents now. Didn't know they lived in Barnes.

Right I'll see what I can find now

Thanks again
