Parents of Joseph Stagg
« on: Friday 07 September 12 16:36 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to find some more information on the parents of my 4g grandfather. Thanks to some very helpful roots chatters I was able to find out quite a bit about Joseph Thompson Stagg. I was also able to find some information on his christening as follows:

name: Joseph Stagg. gender: Male. baptism/christening date: 21 Jul 1775
baptism/christening place: Ireby, Cumberland, England
father's name: John Stagg mother's name: Bella

Joseph named his oldest daughter Isabella so I think that may have been his mothers first name? Bella for short?

Joseph's second son John Thompson Stagg was born in Ireby as well, however it was misspelled in the 1881 census.:
Jno. Stagg
Other:    Mary A.
Birth:    abt 1818 - Treby, Cumberland, England
Residence:    1881 - Wallsend, Northumberland, England

Joseph's third son Thomas Hackworth Stagg was born close by in Bolton Gate or maybe Wigton, Cumberland England:

Name:    Thomas Stagg
Spouse:    Mary Stagg
Other:    John
Birth:    abt 1819 - Bolton Gate, Cumberland, England
Residence:    1871 - Newcastle upon Tyne, All Saints, Northumberland, England

or

Name:    Thomas Stagg
Spouse:    Mary Stagg
Other:    Thomasina
Birth:    abt 1820 - Wigton, Cumberland, England
Residence:    1851 - Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne All Saints, Northumberland, England

All this to say I think Joseph's  roots are in the Ireby area of Cumberland so hopefully that is where we will find his parents. I have not had much luck finding anything besides Joseph's Christening mentioned above. I do know that he was in the Army for 24 years. He retired in 1818 as a sergeant and served in the 20th and 24th light dragoons. His oldest son Joseph was born is Sicily (Italy)  in 1816. He returned to Cumberland following his retirement, had two more sons and moved to Newcastle on Tyne permanently by 1824 where he had his first daughter Isabella.

I hope this wasn't too long winded! and thanks in advance for any help.

Hi there

Just wondering if they had two Josephs as I have found another one
but at an earlier date.

Joseph Stagg christened 4th September 1771 at Bolton Parish
parents John and Bella
plus
John Stag christened 10th March 1770 died 26th September 1781
at Bolton parents are John and Bellah
Ann Stagg christened 14th June 1777 at Ireby, to John and Bella
Different parts of Bolton are between 2 and 5 miles from Ireby.

Thanks again! I found the Indexes and looked at just about all of them but came up empty on a marriage of John and Bella. There are lots of other Staggs though! I'll see what I can put together with them.

Hi
The Carlisle marriage licences/bonds has your couple:

23 Apr 1767
John Stagg, Sandale, p Bolton, yeoman
Isabella Thompson, Bolton gate p Bolton
bondsman: Joseph Thompson, ditto, yeoman
marriage to take place at Bolton

Usually the marriage would take place within 0-2 days of the licence.

regards
Deborah

15 Sep 1765
George Little, Sandale p Bolton, yeoman
Jane Stagg, Sandale
bondsman: John Stagg, Sandale, soldier
marriage to take place at Bolton

Hope it helps
