Hi,
I have an idea why Maria was called Maria Marshall SMITH on her birth cert. and then became just Maria MARSHALL later on.
Going backwards here are Robert and Sarah SMITH in 1871,
1871 RG10/3476 f.39 p.22 Codnor and Loscoe, Derbyshire
Wright St
Robert SMITH Head Mar 37 Coal Miner Derby Aston
Sarah " Wife Mar 43 Notts Kneeton
Frances MARSHALL Daur-in-law 13 Scholar Notts Radford
William " Nephew 3 Nottingham
Elizabeth G GENT Boarder 8m Derby Codnor
I expect you know that daur-in-law then could mean stepdaughter as we would say today.
Marriage
Robert SMITH Jun Q 1867 Nottingham 7b 337
other names with same reference,
Walter ATTENBORROW
Mary HAWKINS
Sarah MARSHALL
In 1871 I can see Walter ATTENBORROW living with a Mary and a lodger Samuel HAWKIN so it looks likely that Robert SMITH married Sarah MARSHALL.
This looks like Sarah in 1861,
1861 RG9/2483 f.34 p.11 Kneeton, Nottinghamshire
Road
Sarah MARSHALL Head Un 33 Dressmaker Nottingham Kneeton
Thomas " Brother Un 18 Ag Lab " Kneeton
Frances " Daur 3 " Radford
I think you will need the birth cert. found by cath151 to prove it unless a baptism is found but I think Maria is the daughter of Frances MARSHALL, so her real name would be Maria MARSHALL. Frances might have added SMITH as that was her step-father's name and possibly the name she was known by at the time.
Regards,
Daisy
