Bernard Joseph O'Connor, Mecklenburg, NC
« on: Tuesday 11 September 12 16:50 BST (UK) »
Trying to trace any info on Bernard Joseph O'Connor who was living in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, NC 28216 during the 1970's and perhaps before.  His last benefit was paid in the 28204 zip area.  He died in Feb 1978.  Perhaps he died in a nursing home?  He was born 4 July 1908 in New York city to  Michael and Bridgett Alice "Delia" O'Connor (nee (O')Dowd)  and had a sister Mary C. (Marion) who remained in N.Y.  I have no info on a spouse or children but would love to find some.
Connor/O Connor, Kiltoom, Westmeath
Duff, Coolure, Mayne, Co. Westmeath
Clancy, Kane, Endrim & Kilpatrick, Kings County
McKenzie, Dublin and Dundee.

I think that the death you're looking at may be the wrong Bernard, as his death record refers to different parents and says he was born in Ireland:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGRM-SQY

Came across this in Long Island National Cemetery.  Interesting that the wife's name is Charlotte, is it possible this is him and there was a mix up between the name and the city?  Any ideas on how I can find more info on this guy?

I doubt there was any such confusion.  The information referencing Charlotte, North Carolina was from the Social Security Death Index, which is information from the federal government.  It is available for free at www.familysearch.org.  While I have seen dates of birth that were slightly off on the SSDI (probably because the person or their survivors were confused about the date), I can't say I've ever seen a place of last residence or benefits that seemed incorrect.

If you read through the previous thread, I believe Sandra found your Bernard's date of birth on a ship's passenger list that listed him with his relatives.  I guess it's just a tremendous coincidence that there is someone with the same name & birth date with a New York connection.

The Social Security Death Index mainly covers people who died from the early 1960's to the present.  Your Bernard may have died prior to that and not ended up on there.

Hi Sandra

Yes very confusing.  This Benjamin person is not the right family.  Is this the end of the trail or can you suggest anything else to help in tracing the siblings?
Thanks to both of you for the imput.

In later census Benjamin was Bernard but obviously not the one you wanted because the parents were different to those you posted on the original thread.

Have gone through the family again, the WW1 Draft for Michael gave the same address as Bernard Joseph O Dowd but the birth date of February 16th 1883 was different to that which Delia gave on a passport application in 1924. She stated Michael was born 23 rd September 1883 - checked that out and didn't come across anything further for him.

Did find the family under Connor on the 1915 Census at the same address as on those WW1 Drafts - 1313 Hoe Ave. Bronx. (The image clearly shows O'connor)  They had another son Edwin aged 3 years, so born 1912. Perhaps Edwin died in the Spanish Flu epidemic.  Bridget as she was in 1910, was now transcribed as Dora but looks like Dela on the image

Michael J Connor 31  and Dora Connor 33
Bernard Connor 7  Edwin Connor 3  Marion Connor 5

In 1925 they were all at Longfellow Avenue, Ben O dowd was still with them

Son Holdorp 9 Born Floral Park. NY.
Daughter Holdorp 4 Born Floral Park NY
Bernard J Odowd 59 Uncle born Eire. Service man - heating.

Sandra
