If he was travelling along the South Deeside road towards Aberdeen,  the farm road would have been to his right.

Isabel - Thank you I should have looked at the streetview map more carefully.  Looking at the picture of the place where my grandfather had his accident, there doesn't seem to be any reason why he would drive off the road and hit a fence post unless he was going too fast.

Lizzie

ps.  Thank you everyone for all your help.  I'm going to call this thread completed now.

Just one last comment, Lizzie. That's entirely possible, but having lived and driven on the upper reaches of the S. Deeside road years ago, I'd suggest another possible explanation. It's a rural road, and would have been even more so in 1926. There are rabbits/pheasants/deer, etc., all without a shred of road sense, that run out unexpectedly.  Swerving in a car is dangerous; for a bike it can be catastrophic. The culprit vanishes unscathed, and all that is left is another apparently inexplicable accident. I'd give the poor man the benefit of the doubt.

Here is a photo of him and his motorcycle - beautifully coloured by a clever Rootschatter.  I've previously been told by Rootschatters that the registration number was an Aberdeen one, so I'm assuming this is probably the motorcycle he was riding - and of course no helmets in those days.

Indeed, RS was one of the registrations used for Aberdeen City.  Unfortunately, records relating to registrations for those letters are presumed destroyed - they're not held by either the Archives in Aberdeen, or the Kithead Trust who hold the records for the RG registrations from 1921 - 1948.

You can see the Kithead Trust's website at www.kitheadtrust.org.uk for more information about them.
