South Deeside Road, Aberdeen - COMPLETED THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED ME
« on: Tuesday 11 September 12 22:55 BST (UK) »
Hi

My grandfather was killed in a motor cycle accident (in 1926) on South Deeside Road, with its junction with Accommodation Road, leading to to the farm of East Tilbouries.  I've tried to find this on Google Streetview, but am not sure which part of South Deeside Road I should be looking for.  I can't find East Tilbouries, nor can I find Accommodation Road.

Can anyone tell me the road number of South Deeside Road and how far along Accommodation Road would be?

Many thanks
Lizzie

On Scotlands Places it gives a grid ref. for East Tilbouries, Maryculter http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=RCAHMS&id=191913
The S. Deeside Rd is the B9077. I may be wrong but I think accommodation road is not the name of the road, but just a description.

Thank you very much, I should be able to find it on Google streetview now.

On  my grandfather's death cert, it states that his place of death was South Deeside Road at its junction with Accommodation Road leading to the farm of East Tilbouries, so I assumed there was a road called Accommodation Road which does seem an odd name for that part of the B9077.

Thank you, Jamieson.

From that map, it doesn't look as though, nowadays, there is an actual junction where the roads meet, but I've looked at it on Streetview so at least I know more or less where he was killed.

When I googled South Deeside Road, I found a few articles about recent car accidents where people were killed along the road, so I guess it's still a dangerous B road.  I imagine people just drive too quickly along it.  Whether that happened to my grandfather we'll never know.  A newspaper report at the time (which a kind Rootschatter found for me a few years back) states "How the accident occurred has not yet been definitely ascertained, but something had gone wrong with the machine, which swerved and crashed into a fence at the side of the road".

I think there is a junction to the farm track - see http://goo.gl/maps/YcCq4 (the sign for East Tilbouries is there too)

If you look at the National Library of Scotland maps website, you can see old maps, including large scale Ordnance Survey ones which you can gradually change to Google maps by moving a sliding bar.

Thank you Archivos, that's about where I thought it was.  I assume as he was (according to the newspaper report) returning to Aberdeen the farm track would have been on his left hand side.

Thank you GR2, I'll look at that tomorrow.
