at St Mary’s?? Roman Catholic Church-Sleaford
« on: Wednesday 12 September 12 01:46 BST (UK) »
In 1945 a newspaper reported a marriage had been held "at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church Sleaford,"  and "The Rev. Farther Simon officiated."

The current Catholic Church in Sleaford is Our Lady of Good Counsel, Jermyn Street, Sleaford, dated 1888. It's the only Catholic Church in Sleaford to my knowledge.  I can't find any other references to a St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. Can anyone help?  The bride was from Helpringham and that was where they were going to live.

Thanks
Angelfish

Have you checked in which registration district the marriage took place? If for instance, the district is Lincoln then it's obvious that the marriage couldn't have taken place in Sleaford!

Also, have you seen the newspaper report, or just a transcription?

ETA: Do you know where the bride and groom were living/likely to be living before they got married?

Hi Pamthomas, thanks for the suggestions.

I've seen the film of the newspaper, not a transcription.
Bride was from Helpringham, where they were to live together.
The Newspaper report also says the reception was held at Picturedrome Café, Sleaford (now disused club Flicks).

I just checked the marriage index and the registration district is Sleaford.

???  Maybe someone at the Newspaper was having a bad day?
If I could rule out Rev. Farther Simon working at Lady of Good Council Catholic Church in Sleaford, that would rule them being married there (unless the Newspaper employee was having a REALLY bad day and got the name of the Rev. wrong too).    ???

Was it a Sleaford paper?

I'm doing everything I can to stop automatically linking things to Boston where the Roman Catholic church is St Mary's. I'm now wondering if Father Simon was in charge at St Mary's Boston but officiated at the wedding in Our Lady of Good Counsel in Sleaford because Our Lady's cleric was either ill or on holiday?
And somehow the churches and the clergy got mangled in the report?

Yes it was a the Sleaford paper.

It's possible it's been mixed up isn't it.  I didn't know that Boston had a St Mary's.  There is also St Mary the Immaculate Catholic Church in Grantham.

After scratching my head for time, I have now come up with what should be the solution.  :)

Contact the Sleaford church and ask if there was a Father Simon based there in 1945. (Give the background to your query.)

Simples, n'est ce pas?

Should the answer be 'no', then do the same with St Mary's in Boston, and then Grantham.
You might have to phone the Boston one, as I can't see an obvious website. Haven't looked for Grantham.

When you contact Sleaford, it might be worth asking if Father Simon wasn't based there, if they still have the register and if so is it possible that they could look to see if the marriage did take place there. The newspaper report will give an approximate, if not precise, date of marriage because they used to say 'Last Saturday' or 'On Monday', so just minus that away from the date of publication of the paper.
