*Completed thank you* Ships Passenger lists England to Canada - Moss
« on: Wednesday 12 September 12 20:22 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone out there who would be willing to help me? - I am researching my G Grandma, its a long story so far but I think I have found her on a passenger list (as a deported passenger) from Canada (Halifax) to Bristol on 29th January 1913. The last record of her before that was 1911 census when she was a servant in Wales.

I dont have access to Canadian passenger lists but would love to be able to find out when she travelled to Canada, which must have been sometime between Apr 1911 and Jan 1913 and also if she was travelling alone.

Her name was Martha Moss, born West Felton Shropshire in 1877 and she died 8th February 1913 in Bristol probably in the workhouse.

Please can anyone help me out with his?

Cautionary note

I have just found an incoming entry for a Martha Moss b 1877 shown as housewife - plus 4 yr old daughter Ethel W

Returning to 32 Mount St Salford Lancs  from Montreal/Quebec 25.6.1919

She may have been the 1911 outgoing entry as the 1913 incoming entry shows birthyear as 1879

Thanks Carole, I am pretty sure that the listing on the Royal Edward in January 1913 Canada to Bristol may be my G Grandma, even though the age is 2 years out.

The background is that she emigrated to Canada with husband Thomas Moss and Elsie May (my Grandma) as Barr Colonists in 1903. They settled, had two more children and for some reason returned in 1906 after they had acquired land, built a house etc. Then I dont know what happened because in the 1911 census Martha is a servant in Wales, all three children are living separately with relatives and Thomas had disappeared?? I  discovered recently that Martha died Feb 8th 1913 and is buried in Middleton on the Hill, Herefordshire -I have been told that she died in Eastville Workhouse, Bristol.

I realise its possible that I may be way off the mark, but the fact that she died in Bristol makes me believe that she may have returned to Canada, became ill and that is why she was deported, I thought if I could find a record of her travelling out to Canada I would be able to perhaps confirm it.
Kind regards  Moira

Hi

Some more information

The following Moss family arrived in St Johns, New Brunswick, Canada April 1903 on the Lake Manitoba

T Moss 35 Farmer heading for Saskatchewan
M Moss 26
E M Moss 2 1/2

The 1906 Canadian Census for Saskatchewan has the following

Thomas Moss 38
Martha Moss 30
Elsie Moss 5
James Moss 2
William Moss 1

It looks like the Moss family returned to England arriving Liverpool from Montreal (I think) on the Virginian 5th Oct 1906

Thos Moss, a farmer
Mrs Moss
Child Moss (male)
Child Moss (male)
Child Moss (female)

The passenger list has no further information

Hi Moira

If you search the 1911 England census for Moss born Canada you will find the 2 boys in different households.

I'm a bit puzzled about the 1913 deportation of Martha Moss from Canada. As I said in an earlier post the Canadian passenger list has Miss Martha Moss age 26 single arriving Quebec on the Royal George June 1911. She was heading for Regina, Saskatchewan. The passenger list does have the word Deport but it is strange that the deportation seems to be 18 months later. I would have thought that if there was an issue on arrival the person would have been returned on the next ship,

Have you found Thomas is the 1911 Census?

Andy
