1861 cen - 65 North St, Holy Trinity, North Myton, Hull
« on: Friday 14 September 12 23:03 BST (UK) »
Hi
Does anyone have an old map which shows 65 North Street, Holy Trinity, North Myton, Hull (St Stephen's)
The building could have been flats or just rooms within the main building, as many families are listed for this one
address on 1861 cen.
A lot has happened in Hull over recent decades and this street may have been re-modernised and become part of the new road structure, but where was it ???

Kind regards

Holy Trinity church, and Myton Bridge are around the Marina, and The Deep.

My guess is that North Street would have been somewhere there?

Thanks KGarrad, tis most likely to be around there, perhaps nearer the church I am thinking. I have read the info for the enumeration district, but again, none of the places/squares come up on maps/google either.

My husband has worked in Hull for over 30 years, so knows it well. He says they could well have been "raised to the ground" during the Blitz, like most of Hull was, so therefore are now not on the maps.

I did look at some Blitz bombing maps, but couldn't spot North Street?

BINGO... found North St on that Blitz map

No 10 bottom right square look for Ferensway and Prospect St, they come to an upside down V at top of the that square, running between them is North St and Brook St below it.

Now I have looked on google maps and it is not listed, so searched for Ferensway and then scrolled, it is still standing at the very end of Debenhams, only 1 old building standing all the rest is very square 1970's buildings.
Looking at the Blitz map it dosen't appear to have been bombed, no markings, so maybe the area had been cleared for remodernisation.

So I wonder if there are any photographs lurking somewhere.

Thanks

So it is!
Behind the Prospect Centre.

There's been a lot of rebuilding around that area since 1861! ;D

I go to Hull one weekend every year (honest!), and must have walked down North Street many times!

Me too have been through there and never noticed the name  ::)
On the following cen 1871 it states 65 North St is a Green Grocer, but many others also live at same No, so I can
only think it was multiple occupancy.

This is interesting, the amount of businesses on North St in the 1892 Directory:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Transcriptions/ERY/Hull1892StreetsN.html

then scroll down to North Street (Prospect St to Collier St)  I find it hard to imagine all those businesses down that little street ??
Looking on the map of Blitz, there is a Collier St adjacent to the Paragon Railway Station / Bus Station. I wonder if before Ferensway was built, that North St extended along what is now Ferensway and upto Collier St ???

Found this: Ferensway Decades

What with the Bus station and the Railway Station, I would think that North Street lies under there, somewhere?

The original Paragon station, and the Royal Hotel, were already in use by the 1850's, so North Street must have been covered over by either the expansion of the Paragon station (c1900?) or the building, and extension of Ferensway.
