Colliery accident?
« on: Tuesday 18 September 12 20:50 BST (UK) »
Hi there

Does anyone out there know of a fatal accident at Whitfield colliery, Stoke on Trent in 1944.
Ive found the death of a relative, a Bate Johnson, on 20th April, 1944 and it gives the place
of death as Whitfield pit.
Wondered if the death was due to an accident.

What does the certificate actually say as the cause of death?

I have a certificate for a death in a Gypsum pit which states 'killed by a fall of roof at gypsum pit'
Rigg/Scholfield - Oldham/Rochdale
Hibbert/Moore - Hayfield/Saddleworth
Garstang/Kirby - Littleborough/Todmorden
Sutcliffe/Hill - Todmorden/Walsden
Young/Stevenson/Newbutt - Ticknall/Kegworth/Nutall/Hucknall/Bulwell
Woolley/Potter, Gaze/Parkins - Kegworth/Normanton-on-Soar/Wheathampstead/Harpenden
Smith/Green - Offley/Flamstead

There is a website that lists many colliery deaths in the North Staffs coalfield - it is not complete though. The pre1947 section can be found at:
http://northstaffsminers.btck.co.uk/
The lists of deaths is a spreadsheet download.

When looking for a relative of mine who died in a pit fall in Atherstone area I found the best information by looking up the Tamworth herald which printed an account of the incident and coroners.

Have you tried the local paper of the area in the weeks after the date of death ?

Hi all

Thanks for all your input. I have sent an e-mail to the chatwhitfield friends as suggested. Just
waiting for a reply.
I dont have a death certificate, it was the probate records that said place of death, Whitfield
colliery, and i just presumed it was through an accident.

Hi,
Do you  realise the  amount of people who died in the pits, under, and top ,you really  need to order his death  cert  and if there was an inquest - then you go from there.

kind regards
