Occupation: Pile Runner COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 19 September 12 09:35 BST (UK) »
I have someone working in the iron trade described on the 1911 census as a 'pile runner' - has anyone come across that before and if so any idea what it is? I've tried the old occupations website with no joy.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul,

A Pile is the head of a arrow.  If he worked at a iron foundary he would probably
be the Runner between different departments either taking messages or the
arrow heads to other parts of the building.  He could also have been the Piler
and they actually fit the arrow head to the shaft.

A Pile Runner (rolling mill) conveys hot piles, fagots or bundles of pieces of wrought iron, from furnace to rolls, usually on overhead runaway from which they are usually slung in a cradle.

Just to add that a Pile is a number of puddled iron rods or bars laid upon each other in rows for reheating, welding, and rolling or forging, and a fagot is a bundle of iron or steel rods bound together..

Carol

Pile Runner is not listed. Just to point out that this in 1911, so not really an "old occupation".

Yes that's the one I mentioned but as Stan noted it's not listed :)

Thanks Sandymc but I think Stan has identified the correct role - cheers all!

Pleased you found it Paul.  If you do search for Pile then it is a arrow point
but maybe years before you required  ;D
