Derbyshire Hearth Tax - Sawley and Long Eaton
« on: Wednesday 19 September 12 11:48 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping that sks with access to the 1982 publication Derbyshire Hearth Tax Assessments 1662-1670 would be able to check for any SMEDLEYs at Sawley or Long Eaton?

thanks,

Darryl

Thank you very much for that Mootoak.

The lack of any Smedley entry raises a bit of a question as I have at least one family there during the period 1662-70.

These are the PR entries from my own transcriptions:

Edward s/o Edward & Dorothy Smedley bap. 1 Nov 1667 (parents mar. Smalley 26 Nov. 1666)
Edward s/ Edward Smeadley bur. 5 Dec 1667
Robert s/o Edward & Dorothy Smedley bap. 25 Sep 1668 (bur. 24 Sep 1701)

Outside the actual dates of the hearth tax but may have been in Sawley or Long Eaton at the time were:

Elizabeth Smedley widdow bur 22 Jan 1671
William Smedley bur 6 Oct 1675

I guess one explanation could be that they were too poor and were exempt the tax, although I understand that in some years all house occupiers were enumerated.

Thanks again for your assistance, much appreciated

Regards, Darryl

the listing also includes those who were exempt, no SMEDLEYS shown in any.

Hmmmm, don't you just love it when things just don't quite fit - and there's not a lot of info from that long ago.

I guess they must have been sharing an abode & that house was recorded under another occupier who shall forever remain unidentified.

Thanks for doing the extra bit of checking.

If I may ask another question, are there any Trees, Trace, Frees Traice and the like recorded for Sawley/Long Eaton?

Hi Darryl,

Have you searched for Wills for your Smedley Family?

Even if they did not own property, it is still possible for them to have left a Will.

This far back, there are thousands of records but all are in Record Offices in various Counties and
also in the Public Record Office at Kew.

Do you have a full name for the Smedley you were seeking in the Heart Tax?

If you are able to give full names and possible christening dates you will possibly get more assistance.

Thank you spendlove for your suggestion; I do have all the relevent Smedley wills that I can find and have personally transcribed the Sawley PR 1655-1900 for all the Smedley and associated family entries.

But not everyone occurs in the PR (only extant from 1650) so I have been hunting for them in other documents. I have two other families that were baptising in Sawley in the 1680's , that of John Smedley, farmer and churchwarden at Long Eaton, and Alice Wilson nee Piggin and William and Anne nee Brown. There were two Smedley marriages in the 1670's, Elizabeth & Thomas Hopwell 25 Jun 1672 and Mary and George Hugnal 27 Jan 1677. In addition, Christian Smedley of Sawley m Lester Trice of Barton Notts. 13 Jan 1686.

If there were no Smedleys in the Hearth Tax, from whence did they come becomes my question. I have now ordered a copy of the Hearth Tax book so I'll be able to search further. I already know that there were other Smedleys in the Hundred at the time so I'm sure I'll have some fun trying to link them all up.

Thanks again for your help
