Webtrees - free genealogy software

Webtrees is a superb free genealogy program. You can install it on the web if you have some webspace and share your data (if you want to) and allow others to view/edit it.

Alternatively you can use it privately on your computer and still use your web browser to view/edit data.

There's a full demo set up on the Webtrees site using the British Royal Family. If you'd like to try out the program with your own data there are two alternatives - do a full install in some webspace or use a 'local' install.

If you'd like to try the latter I've packaged the latest stable version of Webtrees with Xampp (a web server) and created an empty database ready for you to import or enter some records.

To try out this great program....

Download the zip file from my Dropbox account here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/107017966/xampp%2Bwebtrees.zip (its around 90MB).

Unzip to somewhere convenient (hard drive/usb stick/your desktop etc): you will have a folder called \xampp

Configure the program: in the folder \xampp double-click the file setup_xampp.bat. It'll do some automatic configuration then ask you for a keypress to finish.

Start the web server: in the \xampp folder double-click the file xampp_start.bat - don't close the window that it creates until you're finished with Webtrees (but you can minimise it).

Open your browser and in the address bar type http://localhost/webtrees

You can log-in using the username webtrees, password webtrees and away you go!

Once you've finished, close your broswer then stop the web server by double-clicking xampp_stop.bat in your \xampp folder.

This package should allow you to test the program but if you intend to continue using it (offline or online) you should take the necessary steps to make the installtion secure - see the Webtrees wiki.
