Hi

Are you sure it is Derwent and not Durrant?
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

There IS a Durrant Road in Chesterfield......here it is in Google street view......looks as though all the housing has been pulled down and just modern buildings......

Hi

Thanks for that, no houses there .
I wonder if it has been redeveloped.
The date on the document is 1934.
would there have been electoral rolls in 1934 ???

My cousin lived on one of the streets just off Durrant Road in the early 70's - mostly terraces with the odd large house and garden, its mostly the terraces that have gone, worth giving Chesterfield Library a ring as Durrant Road ran down the side of the old Royal Hospital - could it have been a maternity home, Scarsdale Hospital was the site of the old Workhouse, also known as 12a Newbold Rd, is it possibly part of the old workhouse?
I have a few books about old Chesterfield I'll have a look and repost if I find anything

Hi Liz

Thank you for that information.

The man I am interested in was asking for help from the British Legion his name was Charles Walton. so perhaps he was in the poor house. I believe he was born Charles Wharton son of George Wharton and Mary Cowlishaw.
Its a long story and he, Charles told so many lies its taken me years to try and figure it all out, but i think im slowly getting there.

Thanks again Lesley

Just looked thru' books on old Chesterfield - there is a picture taken 1977 looking up Durrant Road towards Sheffield Road and the old Royal Hospital, it is mostly blocks of terraced houses.  The reason I wondered if it was a maternity hospital was I was born in the Maternity Home at Chesterfield. My mum said the entrance to it was down Durrant Road but that may just have been an entrance to the back part of the hospital :)  I get to Chesterfield fairly frequently - next time I go to the library I will ask about electoral registers and see what I can find.
