Birth lookup please - Biggleswade, SMITH
« on: Friday 21 September 12 17:18 BST (UK) »
I’m desperately trying to track down  James-Saby SMITH.  Hoping for birth or baptism records please!

I have 2 possible birth dates from other docs of 27 October 1860 or December 1856..  Also, marriage date of 12 January 1887.
Born  1860-62 Biggleswade or Carcut or Caldecot (? from 1871 Census).  Can’t reliably find him in 1881.

Father, Chas or Charles SMITH, mother or Eliza or Elizabeth (pos ) BAMBY or BARNABY. Probably Catholic.

Also known as James-Sabey, James-Savey, James-Henry, Henry, Henri, Harry but always SMITH.  May have a brother called Charles.

Looks like: 1860s to mid/late 1880s in Biggleswade, 1888? to 1890? In London, 1891? to late 1890s in Antwerp Belgium, then pos 1900s onwards in Doncaster.

I don’t think he’s the same James Sabey SMITH born in 1870 in Hungtindon, Huntingdonshire - though both ended up in Doncaster around the same time – so thinking might be related but can’t find out how.

Hi

? Are you drawing us to look at . . . . . .

1861 RG9 996 74 page 21
Back Street Biggleswade
Chas Smith 23 Northile(Northill?)
Eliza Smith 24 St Ives
Charles Smith 4 Caldecot(Caldecote?)
Frederick Smith 3 Northill
James Smith 6 Months Biggleswade

I originally thought that Caldecot was Upper/Lower Caldecote close to Northill Biggleswade
"Eliza" and StIves? Huntingdon or Cambridgeshire?
There is a StIves in Cambridgeshire as there is also Caldecote
Not far from Caldecote is Caxton

So?
Marriage Dec 1856 Caxton 3b 1063
Charles Smith / Elizabeth Grange

Then?
Birth Jun 1860 St Ives 3b 268 James SMITH

?

Hey Ray,

Now I have to admit I was leaning towards Chas and Eliza (still makes me laugh) although you’ve put a cat amoungst the pigeons as I’ve already got a marr cert between Charles SMITH and Eliza BAMBY  in 1856 in Northill, Upper Caldecot.  But lo and behold St Ives and St Neots etc,  are quite close as the counties share borders (Bedfordshire, Cambridge & old Huntingtonshire) around there.

I have got several James SMITH birth certs which don’t seem right but I’ll have to try that one as it is so close.  On the 1861 census his place of birth is Biggleswade but the 18671 is a bit unclear but looks like Carcut or as I’ve taken it as Caldecote which didn’t seem to matter to me at the time as I thought they’d remember accurately where he was born only the year after!  As ever, the Smiths are a trifle tricky.

Thanks, Fiona O

1871 census RG10 3371 109 28
Dawsons Court, St Nicholas, Lincoln, Lincolnshire
Smith  Charles  30 1841 Green Grocer St Ives, Hunts
Smith Elizabeth  31 1840 St Ives, Hunts
Smith Charles  15 1856 North Hill, Beds
Smith Frederick  13 1858 North Hill, Beds
Smith James  11 1860 Carcut, Beds
Smith Rosa  9 1862 Biggleswade, Beds
Smith Elizabeth  3 1868 Biggleswade, Beds
Smith Sarah  1 1870 Lincoln, Lincoln.

I’ve just rechecked online and this is, amazingly, the only listing in 1871 for a Charles and a James birth place of Beds.  Also rechecked the place and it definitely looks like Carcut.  The fathers profession is curious because on the previous census and the marr cert I’ve got he’s listed as a labourer and the James I’m after consistently lists his trade as horse dealer/trader/slaughterer. I've yet to make a definite connection with the travelling community.

I do have an immigration record in 1892 in Belgium for what appears to be brothers Charles (b 1856) and James Savey called Henry (b 1860 Biggleswade) which would tie in with both the 1861 and 1871 census.
