Relationship John McLaren to George Hepburn Laughland
« on: Friday 21 September 12 23:41 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to link the relationship of John McLaren who witnessed the death of his cousin George Hepburn Laughlan on 28th January 1861.  John lived in 8 Moncrieff Street, Paisley, and his late cousin lived in 4 Moncrieff Street.    George was 3½ when he died.

I wondered if John McLaren was on 1841 & 1851 census?

Can anyone help?   I should add that Laughlan has been spelt a number of ways including Lachlan Laughland Lochlin Maclachlan
Glos:  Burgess, Evans
Renf:  Laughlan, Grieve (Lanchline/Laughland/Lachlan) (Greive/Grive)
Drumachose, Derry: Laughlan, Stewart
S/Set:Westlake, Puddy, Dunstone
Worc: Cook, Heaven
Hants: Cook, Puddy
Cty Clare, Limerick: Gleeson, Tierney
Canada:  Goring
UK: Gorringe, Lloyd (Loy)

Hi  joody_anne

CENSUS At 8 Moncrieff St, Paisley in 1861:
Head: William LAUGHLAND, b Ireland
Wife: Jane 26, b Paisley
Son:? Sarah? 10, b Paisley (before parents marriage?)
Son: William John 2, b Auchinlech, Ayr
Son: George 6 mths

You have George Hepburn LAUGHLAN as deceased in January 1861 - was he  incorrectly counted on the census, which was taken after the death date?

FAMILY SEARCH:
George Hepburn LAUGHLAN
Born 5 Oct 1860
Parents William LAUGHLAND & Jeanie GRIEVE

PARENTS married in 1855, Govan, Lanarkshire
OTHER ISSUE:
John 1856, Govan, Lanarkshire
William John 1858, Auchinlech
Jane Galloway 1864, Paisley
Catherine 1866 Paisley

There are other McLAUCHLAN's on Moncrieff St 1861, and there is a 4 Moncrieff with a family McLERIE in it, no John, no McLARENS.

Is  John's surname clearly written as  McLAREN?

Cheers

You are right Ambly - I hadn't noticed the date of the 1861 census which was 1861 Census   Sunday 7th April 1861.

His death cert definitely shows date of death as - oh darn it - he died in 1864 - it did look like a *1*  - at least we've sorted that out - his death was 28 Jan 1864.  My apologies for the typo.

The name Sarah is supposed to be Samuel (W Laughlan had Samuel to an earlier wife) - the writing is bad, but you will see "he" is a son.

I've attached a bit of the death cert - it looks like McLaren - what do you think? - is there any way McLerie could be McLaren?

Thanks for answering me, its much appreciated.

Hi  ;D

Ah,  yes - the numbers can be hard to make out at times. - but 1864 it is, I agree - and also that is is McLAREN for John.

Noting that  4 Moncrieff St is where little Georgie dies, not neccesarily the same as his usual place of abode.
By 1864 there could be other family in Nr 4 ( named anything at all )  whilst  the McLAUGHLANs are still at Nr 8 (as they were in 1861) and 'cousin John McLAREN" is there too (according to the death cert address).  Cousin could be quite a broad term -  could be '2nd or 3rd Cousin, 1st cousin once removed, cousin-in-law and to either parent.

I can only suggest investigating George's parents each by each, their siblings, parents, etc and try finding a McLAREN connection that way.

Cheers

Yes, I agree with you entirely.

Such a pity that Laughland can be and has been spelt so many different way.s

Here's hoping!

Thanks for your help.
