WARD Family/ East Dereham
« on: Friday 27 May 05 23:23 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Looking for census info on Thomas WARD, born 1797, wife Susannah, born 1801, both in East Dereham. Children Thomas Nicholson, Hanna Elizabeth, Edward Gostling and Maria Susannah WARD, born between 1824 and 1831 in E.D.
I thought the 1841 census might be a good place to start?Grateful for any help.
Jim

Hi Clare,
Thanks very much. The info that you sent is very helpful.
Can you check for this family in the 1851 and 1861 census returns as well, again in East Dereham? I have been able to track down Thomas (Jr.) in London in 1861, but I would like to follow his parents and the rest of the family. I am trying to narrow down the dates for the deaths of the parents, Thomas (Sr.) and his wife, Susannah.
Thanks again.
Jim

Hi Jim,

I didn't have much luck with the 1851, I could only find three of them.

This appears to be Susan & Jonathan in 1851.

Edward  NICHOLSON   Head   U   42   M   Druggist   Est Dereham-Nfk
Susan  WARD   Hskp   M   50   F   Housekeeper   Dereham-Nfk
Jonathan  WARD   Neph   U   14   M   ---   Dereham-Nfk
   Address:   Shipdham Road, Mitford
   Census Place:   Yaxham Mitford, Norfolk
PRO Reference:   HO/107/1824   Folio:   181   Page:   6   FHL Film:   0207478

And this entry is a possibilty for Thomas Snr, (at the end of the household)

Thomas  REDGRAVE   Head   M   33   M   Farmer 100 Acres Emply 2 Lab   Hardwick-Nfk
Mary Ann  REDGRAVE   Wife   M   28   F   ---   Pulham-Nfk
Sarah Jane  REDGRAVE   Daur   -   5   F   ---   Starston-Nfk
Fanny Ann  REDGRAVE   Daur   -   3   F   ---   Starston-Nfk
Elizabeth  REDGRAVE   Daur   -   1   F   ---   Starston-Nfk
Hannah  SHELDRAKE   Serv   U   16   F   House Servt   Alburgh-Nfk
Ann  LAND   Serv   -   20   F   Nurse Girl   Pulham-Nfk
William  WRIGHT   Serv   U   31   M   Farm Servt   Hardwick-Nfk
Lewis  ADCOCK   Serv   U   17   M   Farm Servt   Pulham-Nfk
Thomas  WARD   Serv   M   53   M   Horse Leader   ...-Nfk
   Address:   ---, Depwade
   Census Place:   Starston Depwade, Norfolk
PRO Reference:   HO/107/1821   Folio:   158   Page:   15   FHL Film:   0207474

From the 1861 I found these possible entries, although some of the ages aren't quite right!!

RG9/1242, F7, Pg9, Sch47.
Hole in the Wall, Church St, East Dereham,

Maria Ward, Head, U, 30, Shoebinder, East Dereham.

RG9/64, F71, Pg17, Sch44.
218, Regent St, Westminster,

Hannah E Ward, Servant, U, 29, Saleswoman, East Dereham.

RG9/12, F66, Pg24, Sch148.
16, St Petersburg Pl, Paddington,

Susan Ward, Head, W, 60, Proprietor of Houses, East Dereham.

RG9/3701, F40, Pg23, Sch124.
North Gate St, Hartlepool,

Edward Ward, Lodger, W, 35, Shoemaker, Norwich, Norfolk.

RG9/373/ F47, Pg17, Sch88.
4, Wandle Ter, South St, Wandsworth,

Jonathan Ward, Lodger, U, 33, Shoemaker, East Dereham.

I think this is the right Jonathan as I found him again in 1871 in Wandsworth & the age was correct. Maybe the enumerator misheard him & put 33 instead of 23.

Hope this helps,
Clare. :)
