1851 Religious Census
« on: Wednesday 26 September 12 10:43 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I've just discovered that there was a religious census in 1851, which gave all the Churches and chapels in a parish (CoE, non-conformist, Quaker and RC) and estimates of how many people attended the services.

I know the microfilms exist at Kew, but I was wondering if there was a copy in or near Cheshire? Or even better if they were online somewhere? I'm just interested in seeing how diverse the parishes my ancestors lived in really were!

Thanks,

There was an Education and Religious Census in 1851, but were purely  statistical ones.

Every parish is not given, the detailed tables are of Registration Districts or Poor Law Unions, and large towns.

Thanks stanmapstone, that's fantastic, really interesting!

From what I'd seen (I should learn not to trust documentaries!) I'd assumed that the original returns survived. Although still interesting, less information that I would of liked.

But still, thank you!

The original records of the census are available to download free of charge as part of the Digital Microfilm project.
See   http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/browse/C8993
I have downloaded the records for Runcorn, there are 84 pages.
