Is this the uniform of the Royal Marine Light Infantry 1878-1899?

It is very difficult to say which he belonged to when there are no collar badges. The photo's I have of that time show some with and some without.
However there seems to be badges on his shoulders which look suspiciously like the Globe and Laurel of the Royal Marines, so maybe yes. Also the cut of the collar is very similar to photo's I have of RMLI.
But that is all I can say.

Thanks, that was all the phots was a head and shoulders but from what i found online it does look like a RM uniform.  If it is then the person concerned was only a private throughout his career

Don't let a real Royal Marine hear you call him a Private, that is for the Brown jobs (Army)

They are referred to as a Marine.

You are correct ....the rank of Marine was adopted after the RMLI and RMA amalgamated doing away with Private RMLI and Gunner RMA after the Great War
