How can I confirm this?

I am trying to find out the parents of William Marshall (born abt 1796).

I have found him on 1841, 1851 and 1861 census. On the 1841 and 1861 census his place of birth is listed as Walsall, but in 1851 it's Stratford-upon-Avon. He married in Walsall in 1822.

I have a found a birth for a William Marshall in 1796 in Stratford-upon-Avon and the parents are listed as Thomas Marshall and Catharine.

The problem I have is if there are no parents on the register (which I believe there weren't pre 1837?) then how can I confirm that these were in fact his parents and this is his birth?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Are you sure it is him on the 3 censuses?

The church registers frequently showed at least one parent and often both.

With a common name you need to find further evidence of connection between parents and children

- parents death certs for informant
- wills of parents
- death notices in local papers
- perhaps connections through siblings

Is he the William Marshall married to Maria?

The 1841 census doesn't tell you where someone was born - only whether born in county or not.

There is a William Marshall, living in Walsall, Staffordshire, who was born in county. Reference HO107, Piece 983, Book/Folio 14/37, Page 30.
Children Edwin, William, and Emelia.

The family can be found again in Walsall in 1861.
Reference RG09, 2106, 9, 13.
William with wife Maria and son William. All born in Walsall.

The 1851 census doesn't show a county, but appears to Stratford on ?? as William (senior) birthplace.
Reference HO107, 2023, 334, 23

I wonder if it should be Shelford, which was a hamlet in the parish of Walsall Foreign?

Yes I am sure it is him as it has the same family with him each time.   I found that Stratford birth on FamilySearch.

Re 1841, yes, I realise it doesn't say the place but you'd expect it to have a N if he was from Stratford (ie Warwickshire)?


Interesting re Shelford. I asked earlier this year on here for help deciphering the handwriting and that's what we came up with.

I guess if I could see registers or find if there is any other information available on them it might give me more clues. I posted last night asking for a look-up on his marriage so fingers crossed somebody responds.
