Trying to find a minister from 1839 in York
« on: Thursday 27 September 12 18:52 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wasn't sure where to post this, so ended up here!

One of my ancestor's children was buried in 1839 in York Cemetery; the minister performing the cemetery was a Robert Sutton.  I was hoping to find out what religion/denomination the family were from the name of the minister.

Can anyone direct me to any resources where I might find Robert Sutton listed?

Many thanks in anticipation.

I don't know if this will help, but while the 1841 census only has him as "clergyman",the 1851 has Robert Sutton, aged 62 as"incumbent curate of Fullford".Unfortunately the Clergy of the Church of England database(CCED),only goes up to 1835,but I cannot see anyone who is clearly him listed before that.

Roger

Hi Roger, thanks so much for your reply.

I looked for him in 1841 but could only find one Robert Sutton in York and he was shown to be of independent means, no mention of clergyman.

Please could you direct me to the 1841 census entry that you found for him?

Many thanks!

In 1851 Robert Sutton is listed in association with St. Oswald's Chapel Fulford.

Thank you hanes teulu and Roger for these interesting snippets - I've also found a couple more myself since posting my query.  I'm not very good on determining religion or denomination and nothing I've found has really spelled it out for me unfortunately.

I asked the question because the child's mother ended her days, sadly, in a workhouse in the 1890s.  I've seen the original workhouse registers on microfiche at my local archives, and upon admission her creed was listed as Baptist, but this is the only indication of this that I have ever come across.

I was hoping to find something else that might confirm or refute it.

Many thanks for all your help and suggestions, much appreciated.
