Back Street Brimington (Completed)
« on: Friday 28 September 12 10:40 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Henry Cowlishaw left a will in 1852 that refers to property in Back Street, Brimington. The name of the street doesn't appear on any maps I have access to so can anyone tell me where it is please?

Back Street can be found in every census except 1911.

So it disappeared between 1901 and 1911.

I did finf the Bugle Arms Inn on Back Street - might be worth a search?

The Bugle Arms, aka The Bugle Horn, can be found in this document:

It is now a car park for the doctor's surgery!

Hi

'A History Of Brimington' written by Vernon Brelsford in 1937 has some old roads which have been renamed.

Back Street was renamed Hall Road

The Bugle Horn, which closed in 1920's, was in Hall Road!

Eureka!!

hi
Go to
www.old-maps.co.uk

put Brimington in the box
select Brimington Derbyshire

select '1898 pre WW2 1:2,500 Derbyshire' from the list on the right
Click the map to the left of Brimington

Back Street is just below the sunday school.

Suggest you save the site in your favourites, I have found it to be very useful and saves having to buy maps.

Thanks so much Heather. I am really impressed with the repsonse to my first question on this forum. I wonder why I took so long to get around to it. :)
