My name is Gary in Australia & I am tracing my wife's forebears including James Phillips who m. Elizabeth Peacock c. 1825 at Langley. James was b. 1803 parents George Phillips & Ann Rowe. Any info re the forebears of James & Elizabeth would be great.

Hi

Are you refering to the James in the 1851 census living at Upper Green, Langley?

James Phillips - head - 48 - ag lab - Langley
Eliza - wife - 48 - Stanstead Mountfitchet
George - son - 16 - Langley
Martha - dau - 11 - Langley
Charlotte - dau - 8 - Langley
Lydia - dau - 3 - Langley
William - grandson - 3 Langley

If so there is this marriage for him

St Mary the virgin and St John the evangelist, Standstead Mountfitchet
Marriages
James Philipps & Eliza Bonneton with consent of parents were married by banns on 9 Feb 1824

Hi Kevin. Thanks very much for that. I cannot find Eliza Bonneton perhaps it might be Bonython. Is it possible she was a Peacock & m & Bonneton.

Are there any records of James' forebears.

Cheers,

Gary.

Hi Gary

St John the evangelist, Langley

Baptism
15 Jul 1804 James son of George & Mary Phillips

Also to same parents
26 July 1801 John Phillips (William was crossed out and replaced with John)
22 June 1806 Thomas Phillips

Marriage
3 March 1801 George Phillips & Mary Simmons (hard to read her surname) both of the parish (can't find baptism or mention of Mary in PRs before parish)

Baptism
14 Feb 1773 George son of George & Mary Philips

Marriage
6 Feb 1772 George Phillips & Mary Toofs both single and of parish

Kevin

I've had a look through the Stanstead PRs and there is an Elizabeth Peacock baptised in 1803, but it is definately not Peacock on the marriage, so perhaps someone has added Peacock because it ties in with the age given on the census (48). On family trees that I have looked at with a Phillips/Peacock marriage, they are saying that it took place in Langley with GUESS? wrote beneath so it shows that it hasn't been researched properly.

Hi Gary

I have been looking through the PRs for St John the evangelist, Langley again regarding Mary Toofs, the marriage entry definately has her down as Toofs however it seems that the name has a few differant spellings over the years, ie Toofs, Tofts and Toft.

Baptisms
29 Mar 1747 Mary Tofts daug of Thomas and Mary
10 Dec 1749 Elizabeth Toft daug of Thomas and Mary
13 Oct 1751 Jane Tofts daug of Thomas and Mary
29 Jun 1760 Susanna Tofts daug of Thomas and Mary
20 Jan 1765 James Tofts age 2 son of Thomas and Mary

Mary's parents
Marriage
23 Dec 1746 Thomas Tofts and Mary Smith both of Langley - by banns
