I have recently come across this charming website which records the history of the Rossendale Quarry's, this link takes you to the oral recordings detailing what how the rock was extracted and what it was used for.

Cool, many thanks. I used to live near the large quarry in Shuttleworth and as boys we used to get chased out by the men. Wouldn't get near these days!
