McGown Gillon McLean
« on: Friday 05 October 12 13:59 BST (UK) »
Hello, my ancestors were born in Ireland around 1829. James McGown married Isabella Gillon(McLean) and they had their first child in 1849 in Dunbarton Scotland.
Do these names indicate any area in Ireland I should start my research.

Thanks
Joe

Did they marry in Ireland? If so, it may help that in 1855, and then from 1860 onwards Scottish birth certs contain the date and place the parents married. If that was in Ireland that should help you identify where to search.

What religious denomination were they?

Hi,

There marriage seems to have been in Dunbarton.

James Mcgowan married Isabella Mclean on 28 June 1847,New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland.

A Church of Scotland marriage would suggest that the bride at least was Presbyterian. Perhaps they both were. In which case, statistically they are more likely to have come from what is now Northern Ireland.

Thanks for info.  From their DC, parents names are McGown, Watson, McLean and McPhee.

I believe that people coming from Ireland to Scotland in the 1800s changed their surnames to hide their origins. Isabella Gillon appeared as Gillon on some certs and McLean on others. (I know that Gillon is a sept of the clan McLean).
Any further info on this would be great.
Thanks
Joe
