Service Records?
« on: Wednesday 10 October 12 12:15 BST (UK) »
HI ALL,

Before I request a search by the M.O.D for my  Grandads service  records which will cost £30, I thought I would ask on here if it was the best thing to do.

He was born June 1907 in Frome Somerset and joined the army ( Royal Artillery) around 1924 at a guess, and started at Larkhill in Wiltshire. He eventually was posted to India and Afganistan, and came out in 1928 after National service, sailing back on the SS Neuralia via Port Said. He died aged 76, in 1982.

Any advise much appreciated,

Regards, Graham Martin

Hi,

Was there National Service/Conscription in the 1920s?   I don't think any post 1920 service records are available on line; think they are still with MOD.   :-\

I just assumed it was national service, but he was an orphan and went straight in the army as soon as he was old enough. So it seems like if i want his records then i have to go to the MOD? Just hope they have something, surely they will!

Graham.

Hi,

Have you looked for him on 1911 census (free on Ancestry at the moment)?  You might find some more background for him.

Yes i have seen him on the 1911 census as a 4 yr old boy,  but it is his military records i am interested in, it would be good to find something out about his army years.
