Good morning Listers,
I am seeking information about the school records of a number of my ancestors, particularly in Coolac  in New South Wales. Coolac School opened in 1872. My families who were living in this area in 1872 were the Hoares, Tabers, Vincents & Harpleys. A small book was published in 1972 to mark the centenary of the opening of the school in September 1872. I would like to know where I can find the names of the first pupils and teacher and also if any of these families were involved in the foundation & construction of the school. My Gt Gt Gr Father Walter Hoare was a farmer in the district & owned the Beehive Hotel in this period. Any information is appreciated

Hi Petwal. To my knowledge, the state archives at Kingswood hold files for state schools in NSW. What you find in the file is a mixed bag. I was looking at several recently and they can contain a variety of papers - from parents petitioning for the opening of schools, inspectors records, lists of children who might attend, donations to the school, etc.
The file would probably answer your question of the first teacher to be employed there, and possibly give a list of families who would intend sending their children to that school if it were to be established.

Yes, State archives holds some wonderful Teacher and School records, but not all have survived so there may be gaps.

May I add to the occupations for your Gt Gt Gt Grandfather Walter HOARE ....  (errrr  both my Grandfathers were born in rural NSW in the 1870's !)

I attended Coolac school and family produced the booklet upon the centenary. A also researching stories related to the family from nineteenth century.
