Nathan Atkinson Aldersley
« on: Sunday 29 May 05 01:41 BST (UK) »
I'm wondering if anyone can help me with the whereabouts of Nathan Atkinson Aldersley in the '41, '51, '61 and '71 censuses. He was born in Carleton-in-Craven in 1826, parents Anthony and Jane Currie, and married one Sarah Green in 1848 in the Skipton Reg. District. By 1855, he was in Keighley and was still there in 1881. His first two children, Alpheus & Jane Anne were born in 1849 & 1851 in Askrigg.

Thanks if you can help,

Stephen

Hi Stephen

You probably have this information by now, but I was searching for Nathan Aldersley this morning in connection with his Salvation Army song, The Christ of Calvary:

Originally a Methodist preacher, Aldersley joined the Salvation Army around 1879, serving as a sergeant at Keighley, Yorkshire, where he sold earthenware.

He moved to New Zealand in 1884 and lived in Christ Church and Wellington. Largely housebound due to severe arthritis, he wrote extensively; several of his songs appeared in the Salvation Army’s War Cry in 1883.

May 26, 1826, Carlton, Yorkshire, England.

October 19, 1899, Wellington, New Zealand.

Old Karori Cemetery, Wellington, New Zealand.

Thanks Rob - yes, I have quite a bit of information on Nathan Atkinson, but I did not know about this particular composition. Just listened to a version on Youtube!
