Birth Cert. 1890 Robert ORMSTON, Jarrow
« on: Friday 12 October 12 22:51 BST (UK) »
My Great-Grandfather Robert married Ada Hannah Richardson in 1912 in Newcastle and they lived together in South Shields.

Robert was born in 1890 in Jarrow/Co. Durham area. His mother was Jane Ormston but I don't know her maiden name or husband's name.

1901 census reveals this:

Reference RG13, Piece 4740, Folio 103, Page 37
7 St Peter's Square, Jarrow

Ormston, John  Head  M  66  Corporation Roadman  b Jarrow
Ormston, Jane  Wife  F  65  b Jarrow
Ormston, Sarah  Daughter  F  34  b Jarrow
Ormston, James  Son  M  29  Engine Fitter  b Jarrow
Ormston, Walter  Son  M  27  Shipyard Labourer  b Jarrow
Ormston, William R  GrandSon  M  14  Newsagent's Errand Boy  b Jarrow
Ormston, Robert  Grandson  M  10  b Jarrow

So I've found Robert, but still don't know whether his Father was James or Walter. I'm also now puzzled as to why Robert was living with his Father's family.

Is anybody able to unearth Robert Ormston's birth certificate so I can find out who his Father was and so I can confirm that his Mother was Jane.

Thanks! :)

Hi

Members of the public do not have access to birth certs so you would need to purchase a copy

Ahh okay, thanks. I wasn't sure if anyone with a GenesReunited subscription or someone who'd previously researched the family would have access.

Robert could be Sarah Ormston's son or the child of another son or (unmarried) daughter of John and Jane Ormston. Living elsewhere. Or dead! If he is illegitimate it would be wise to purchase his birth and marriage certificate as his marriage certificate may be less truthful than it should be.

Hi

If somebody researching the family has already bought a copy of the cert - then you are dependant on that person seeing this post and giving you the info from it.

Membership of GRU would only put you in touch with another researcher but would not guarantee they had purchased the birth cert.

In the absence of any online baptismal record or any local transcription - the only certain way of establishing parentage is via the birth cert.

Illegitimate children often made up a fathers name when they married so as to appear "respectable" which is why marriage certs are often an unreliable source

Thanks! :)

Don't forget that the census only lists the people living at that address at mid-night on census day, Sunday 31st March, they could have just been staying for the weekend.

Durham County Record Office will probably hold the Parish Registers.

If you can get there, you should be able to see them?

Don't think they are available online.

1891 Census Robert is aged 4mths living with Grandparents John/Jane
In 1891/1901 John/Jane also have a Grandson William R age 4/14 with them.

In the last Census available William/Robert are with SARAH Ormston c 1866

A Tree on Anc. has Sarah as the Mother of both William/Robert.
I have no idea if they have Certs to back this up.

Trish :)

Thank you Barry and Trish...

It turns out that Sarah is the Mother of Robert Ormston but I have no known info in the Father. The mystery "Jane" turns out to be none other than his Grand-Mother (Jane Ormston (maiden: Robson) with whom he lived as a child.
