Could hinger be hanger, as in wallpaper?

Indweller is more likely. As for "hinger", that does not seem right at all. Can you post the section of the entry with it so we can see it?

Kirkie, had pits, foundries and the odd mill, lacemaking, making lappets? for example. There was an occupation of "tenter", might this be related.
No doubt there were a few "hinger-oans", but that's a different matter entirely.

Skoosh.

Hi everyone, many thanks for all the replies and yes, I loooked at some other certs I had which included other people and agree that it's Indweller but still can't get the other one (hinger). Hopefully I've attached it to this message.

It certainly looks like hinger, but I can't think of any meaning that would make sense. I've also looked in the 10 volume Scottish National Dictionary and there's nothing sensible there either. Perhaps the way to solve it would be to find him in another record and see what his occupation is there.

I've been to the OED for hinger, no help at all. It does offer hinger as an archaic spelling for hanger, meaning short sword, but this is of no help in context. I think we need to look for alternative readings of the handwriting, though not sure what they might be!
