Norway - A LINDAHL born 1883
« on: Monday 15 October 12 22:27 BST (UK) »
The abovenoted person was born in Norway during 1883.

What happened to him -  could he have migrated to Australia or New Zealand in the early 1900s?

If so he could be my elusive grandfather who was known since his marriage in Wellington NZ in January 1908 as Albert Clarence LINDALE

Any info will be much apopreciated

Hi DonL!

This could be a good one, possibilities in the 1900-census and the emigration lists!

But have you got any idea about area? ("fylke" and "kommune")

Exact DOB...?

Hi Jan, I believe that I am barking up the wrong tree as I have since found that he was living in Germany from 1909 at least up to 1918 - and as my gtrandfather was here in NZ at the time, they are different people.

So I can close off this query.

Thank

Kia Ora Jan ( A Maori greeting)

Having discounted Albert Nikolaus LINDAHL as my grandfather, I have now come across a shipping entry which has  an A LINDAHL aged 21 Born Norway 1883 as an AB on board the ship Tasmania which sailed from Liverpool arriving  Sydney, NSW, Australia on 12th February 1904 .

Would you be able to trace him as a seaman prior to him joining the Tasmania in Liverpool, probably late 1903.

On my grandfather's marriage he states he has been in Wellington for four years before his marriage which was in January 1908 -  so the timing looks about right. I will try to find any details a a deserter from that ship as this was a common practice in those days. In fact my maternal great grandfather who was from Sweden did exactly that. He is the one who married Fredericce Olava Olsen.

I have recently had a Y-DNA test which ascertained that my haplogroup is 12b 1 which apparently had its origins in Northern France but is more commonly now connected to Viking/Scandinavia.

So on my paternal side i appear to have definite Scandinavian ancestry.

Regards

DonL

By the way -  the photo image on my postings is of mt elusive grandfather

This could be a bit of a puzzle, Don!

I've had  a quick look in the emigration lists as well as the Kristiania 1885-census with no luck!

The latter shows an "Albert Berg", born 1882, but I don't think he's worth the bother just yet.

The sailor rolls for Oslo/Kristiania are here:

Oslo, Annotasjonsrulle , 1897 - 1908

Oslo sjømannskontor (1877-1948)

Unfortunately quite a lot of browsing necesessary, but I know other rootschatters from "down under" have been successful with this!

You may want to have a go a rainy day yourself, or hopefully some eager Rootschatters are willing to help us!

Hi DonL!

Are you sure that your Albert Clarence Lindale was born in Norway and that he was born c1883? Clarence is a very unusual name in Norway. In the 1900 census from the variants of the name Clarence, (I looked up names containing lar) only one was born in Norway, one in Sweden and the rest in the USA.

I have found one Albert Lindal in Norway in 1900 in Nordland, b c1882 but unfortunately it doesn't give his place of birth.

Thanks for your response.

The answer is I don't really know where he was born. He was married twice -  on his first marriage certificate he has his birthplace as Newcastle, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA. 34 years later in 1942 when he married again, he states his birthplace as Armidale, NSW. So even he does not know his birthplace.

I have not found any records in Australia for a birth in his name of Lindale or as he had in his newspaper announcement of LINDHAL, even his second wife did not know her birthplace but assumed as she live there as a child that Dunedin NZ was her birthplace, I have since discovered that she was born in Oatlands, Tasmania, AUSTRALIA. So as his father Nicoli was from Scandinavia I thought I would search there  as no one really knows where they are born if they don't have a birth certificate - so far without any luck. His birth year is an assumption - I can't find a record which shows his actual birthday and various records have him born anywhere between 1881 and 1883.
He is my mountainous brickwall - and I will just have to keep on looking and searching  and praying that someone in Rootschattersland stumbles on to a clue leading to his true identity and ancestry.

Cheers

Don

Hi Don,

I wonder if your Albert may have had a brother ?   and if you would be interested in an Australian WWI service file for a Francis Oscar LINDAHL, enlisted Darwin, NT, Australia with place of birth Aalborg Denmark, and with his father as Julius LINDALL, deceased, Director of Glass Factory, and a sister initially as his nok, she in England…. And the file has Francis’ marriage details too and her details as his nok … WWI files are digitised at this link:  (search as a guest)

Cheers,  JM (yes, still looking out for your Albert  :) of course )

Thanks for that info of Francis Oscar Lindahl -  I have looked at those records and other info relating to him and so far have not found any connection. Have also been in contact with one of his living ancestors and so far no link has been made.

I was excited when I first looked and did think there may be a link -  unfortunately no luck  -  yet

I'll just have to keep on searching. My grandfather must have family some where as his marriage announcement stated he was the eldest son of Mr H LINDHAL-  where are the families of those other brothers?

Once again, thanks for your information.
