Thanks for your work Radcliff and I get your point even more when I see the selection you offer as it is very hard to decide which is the most likely.  The one that appeals most is the last, son of Robert and Mary, Smallbridge, as Robert is a very strong family name and Smallbridge was a place where subsequent family members lived, but it is only a hunch.  I'll leave things for a while and concentrate on other facets of the family.

Thanks very much for your help.  My sister travelled to Rochdale in the 1960's trying to trace relatives and gave up when she found out how common the Howarth name is in Rochdale, so I do understand the problem.

Thanks, this family does seem to fit into "my" family.  Names and occupations fit.  John, James and Robert are popular family names.  Most of the family worked in the wool industry.

Hope you enjoy your visit Radcliff, I visited Rochdale in May 2011 and had an interesting time visiting sites of family significance, including St Chad's, may even have stayed at the public house where my great grandparents had their after wedding drinks and sat on the very same seats in the snug.

My Dad is John Howarth aged 73 of Sparth bottoms Rochdale and his Father was also John Howarth ... would be interesting to know if there was a link as some of the family lived in castleton

St Chad's is the parish church in Rochdale.  If you are standing in the town centre admiring the very fine Victorian Town Hall (as you really should https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rochdale_Town_Hall ), you will see St Chad's towering over it at the top of a set of 124 steps . http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Rochdale/Rochdale/stchad/ .

You have put your request on a completed post.
It would be better to tell us what you know about your grandparents,say names,when they were married,their children ,where they lived etc and put a request on the Lancashire Board and then maybe somebody can help trace your Howarths backwards.
and bear in mind that Castleton used to be the area around Milkstone Rd and Sparth to Sudden. I'm sure your dad remembers the Castle Inn.
