Leicester Lunatic Asylum
« on: Friday 19 October 12 10:56 BST (UK) »
Reading another posting it looks as if it is possible to obtain details of records about the Leicester Lunatic Asylum patients (and staff?).
I have a Bartholomew Cox b 1806  d 1871 recorded as a patient on the 1871 census. Would the records show any further detail?
Also his son George Cox b 1830 d 1880 is shown on the 1871 census as a servant at the asylum and on his marrisge cert  as occupation asylum attendant at Humberstone.
Would it be worth visiting Wigston, and are these records available?
Cox - Cosby, Leicester Belgrave, St Margarets
Wells - Leicester St Margaret, Countesthorpe.
Powers - Leicester St Mary, Woolwich, London.
Wakelin & Kenny- Whetstone
Bills, Johnson, Bent, Nutting, Belcher - Ibstock, Barlestone, Osbaston, Coalville, Billesdon.
Wyatt - Parkeston, Harwich, Great Oakley, Chelmsford.
Summers - Midsommer Norton, Somerset.

Do you mean the Towers? If so, then yes, you may well strike lucky if you visit the records office.

My ancestor was one of the first intake into the Towers when it opened and I found her details very quickly in the admissions book. This lists (from memory, don't have my photocopy to hand) the name of the patient, when they were first admitted, whether it was their first admission, the address from which they were admitted, their diagnosis and their discharge or death date.So it's not masses of info but to me, even that much was a great find.

When I got this info, the records had not been indexed (and as far as I know this is still the case- someone will say if I'm wrong!) so you will have to request the original book to be brought out of the backroom then be prepared to spend some time flicking through.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply Annie.

Was The Towers in Humberstone?
Was it in existance in 1871?
Don't know a lot about the history of the Towers but may google it to find out.

May arrange a day out to Wigston, may even see old school (Abington)
