Lily May Barton of Drumhurn
« on: Monday 22 October 12 01:56 BST (UK) »
My grandmother Lily May Barton was born 18 August 1909 in Fermanagh on the farm known as Drumhurn. Her father, William Barton, died shortly before she was born aged 79.
He had been married before and I am told he had three sons (Greg, William and Thomas)and two daughters by this first marriage. Don't know the daughters names but one married an Armstrong (school master of Enniskillen workhouse) and the other married a Whittaker.
Any information on William Barton and this family would be much appreciated :)

And something in the wills index, will not digitised so you would need to order it:

Administration of the Estate of William Barton late of Drumhurn, County Fermanagh Farmer who died 19 April 1909 granted at Armagh to Gregg Barton Farmer.

William Barton married Bessie Johnston in Drumkeeran Church of Ireland in July 1904 and they went on to have the children shown in the 1911 census.  Annie E (1908) is Annie Elizabeth and Joseph F (1905) is Joseph Frederick.

William's previous marriage is proving more difficult.  Given the ages of William (junior) and Gregg in the 1901 census, there is a potential candidate in the marriage of a William Barton to a Margaret Crane or Crean in Kilskeery Church of Ireland in 1855.  Children to this couple include George 1865, Sarah 1870, William 1873, unnamed 1875, and unnamed 1878, though I suspect there may be other children.  Anyhow, I wouldn't rule that marriage in or out until you can find out more.

BTW, there is a grave in Magheraculmoney Church of Ireland in the townland of Tullanaglug  for a Gregg Barton, died 28 Feb 1964. Maybe William's son... again I wouldn't rule it out just yet.

Thanks so much gaffy. A bit for me to go on. Yes you have the correct family in the census. Where did you find the William Barton and Margaret Crane marriage details as that sounds promising.
Thanks again :)

I've sent you a pm.

Also, I've noticed a marriage for an Alexander Armstrong to a Margaret Anne Barton in 1892 in the parish of Drumkeeran. Alexander is described as a farmer (which isn't exactly your workhouse schoolmaster but who's to say he wasn't?).

Critically though, Margaret Anne's father is cited as William Barton and one of the witnesses is a Gregg Barton.
