According to 1891 census, she was shown as "grandaughter" .
1881 Chignal
Elizabeth Byford wid aged 46 born Shalford
Joseph son 19 born Shalford
William 9 Chignal
Henry 6 Chignal
Gwendoline Elizabeth Cartwright g/d 4 born Writtle

1901 shows Gwendoline  as a servant living away from home

I cannot find out who her parents are and no marriage found between Byford and Cartwright as yet

1907 she married Herbert Martin in Ongar, she is also known as Elizabeth Ellen which is shown on her death 1971, Maldon

Her birth is registered as Elizabeth Ellen G Cartwright, Chelsmford 1887.

In 1881 Elizabeth Ellen Byford has 2 daughters- have you looked for them in marriages/censuses?

there is a birth for a Philip John W Cartwright in 1888

He is living with parents John and Elizabeth R Cartright in 1891 in Blackmore (Ongar district)

Elizabeth's birth details are similar to Elizabeth Byford's (daughter from 1881 census)

Your dates don't make sense in the original post and you seem to have 2 censuses mixed up

I haven't as yet got her marriage details, I was trying for a short cut, I hope to get to the ERO very soon but impatience got the better of me, marriage in Ongar might be a little easier as I know whom she married

I have a family on 1881 living Hole Farm Chignal with parents Philip and Elizabeth Ellen Byford,
1891 Gwendoline is living with her widowed grandmother Elizabeth Byford

I then checked 1891 for both of the daughters and low and behold an Elizabeth R Cartwright is living with a John Cartwright

1888 there is a marriage John Cartwright Maldon but there is no cross reference, so I will delve further on the 1901

I have corrected the census and replied but I think we crossed at the same time  but it looks as if John and Elizabeth might well be the parents of Gwendoline, Elizabeth born out of wedlock

Hi Folks
I have traced Elizabeth and John Cartright right through to 1911 although I think she has a memory lapse about her marriage, says 26 years which brings it to 1885 but I am sure the marriage in 1888 is the right one even though at the moment there is no cross reference, I need to look at another source

I think I will now call this complete till I get to look at marriage 1907 Ongar and baptism possibly Writtle for the girl born 1887

The Maldon spouses have possibility of John Cartwright and Edith Alice Gozzett - they are together in 1891 with the Gozzett family.

1911 states Elizabeth has been married 26 years which as I said puts it at 1885, ah well, back to the drawing board, I think I will consentrate on looking for a baptism first in Writtle
