Margaret Percy
« on: Wednesday 24 October 12 12:15 BST (UK) »
Hi

If anyone is able to look up a birth for me in Newcastle as I'm wanting to check parents names it would be much appreciated.

The GRO Index has a Margaret Percy born Newcastle Mar 1978, Vol 10b, page 241.  If this woman is the right person I'm looking for her parents should be Andrew Percy and Agnes Pyles.

It may be impossible to find that information out without ordering a certificate?

Happy to reciprocate if anyone needs anything looked for in Glasgow.

Thanks

Sarah

  Sarah, - I wish !

Although the GRO indexes are fairly easy to access ( e.g. FreeBMD), the only way
to see the full details of a b/m/d registration is to buy a certificate ( i.e. a certified
  copy of the original registration).

Another option would be to trace the corresponding church record of baptism, marriage,
death/burial. But difficult if church/denomination is not known.

I notice ( from 1881 Scotland census) that 3 yr old Margaret Percy is the only England-
born member of large Percy family in Dumfries, with parents Andrew and Agnes.

ScotlandsPeople site has Andrew Percy/Agnes PYLES marrying in 1870.

The transcription of the 1881 census has a lodger called TYLES in the Percy household.

Thanks Michael - I noticed the different spellings of Tyles/Pyles too but I think the marriage certificate is likely to be most accurate. I've got 3 probables for the birth by narrowing them down based on age and proximity to Dumfries as well as road links and am trying to find a way of narrowing it down further before ordering certificates!  It's not crucial so don't want to spend too much on certificates but would be interesting to explore this English link with the family.  I think it could either be through the father because there are other Percy births in the Newcastle area or the mother possibly explaining the lodger with her maiden name.

Cheers

Road links !  The railways linked Carlisle and Newcastle (60 miles) as early as late 1830s !

Timetable from 1841 shows about 5 trains a day - each way.
  e.g. 9am Newcastle- Carlisle 12.30pm. ( 2.30pm mail train took 30 mins less)

Fare 11/- for covered carriage, 8/6 for open carriage - brrrrr !

Trade Directory for 1824 shows that two coaches left Newcastle for Carlisle daily at 7 and 8 am.
Average speed for the 60 miles- c7 mph. Dont know cost of journey.

Do later censuses reveal a little more on Margaret Percy birthplace e.g. Country and County, rather tan just country ?

What was the religious denomination of the Percys ?

Andrew Percy and Agnes Pyles are my gt gt grandparents. The Margaret Pyles lodging with them on the 1881 census is Margaret Martin Pyles, b 1851, Agnes's sister. I haven't got her birth cert but all links point to her being born in Newcastle. There were other members of the family who lived in Newcastle so probably on a visit at the time of birth.

It's been a few years since this post was started so you probably know all this by now  ;D
